I went to put some food on the bird tables the other morning and noticed a small ball of fur in the grass beside one of the tables. I was quite surprised to see a vole sp. which seemed quite happy just sitting there munching away on some fallen seeds. Bearing in mind that it was 9 am and in full daylight I thought it unusual to see such a species out in the open but as I’ve pretty much cat-proofed the garden now perhaps it had become accustomed to feeding in the open during the day. The following few days I discovered a whole network of tunnels in the garden so it hadn’t just arrived recently – this little fellow had obviously been busy for quite some time !

There are a number of potential vole species to consider in this part of France but without examining it in the hand and in fine detail it seems from the general appearance and colouration that it’s a Field Vole (Microtus agrestis).
